Featured in the West Surrey Badger Group Newsletter – Autumn 2026

November 2026 | Wildlife Photography & Fieldwork

I was delighted to see my wildlife photography featured in the Autumn 2026 edition of the West Surrey Badger Group (WSBG) newsletter, alongside a mention of my participation in a recent badger sett surveying session.

Wildlife Photography at Tankersford

Page 6 features two of my badger photographs alongside an article by Brendon Hollands, “A Long, Hot Summer at the Tankersford Hide.”

The article reflects on a successful season of badger watching at the group’s hide near Tilford, Surrey. Despite the challenges of an exceptionally hot and dry summer, the group welcomed 53 visitors across nine evenings, with badgers observed during every session.

Having my photographs included was particularly rewarding. Wildlife photography is something I am passionate about, and capturing these animals in their natural environment is a wonderful opportunity to combine my interests in photography, ecology and conservation.

Developing My Badger Surveying Skills

Page 7 also features an article by Pete Eggleton, “A Day Out for Sett Survey Training,” covering a fieldwork session I attended at Farley Heath.

Our group followed a planned route to investigate five badger setts, looking for evidence of occupation and activity.

During the survey, we examined several important field signs, including:

  • Active sett entrances and freshly excavated spoil heaps.
  • Bedding material around entrance holes.
  • Well-used pathways connecting entrances and foraging areas.
  • Badger footprints and hairs.
  • Dung pits and evidence of territorial activity.

One particularly interesting sett had twelve well-used entrances, providing an excellent opportunity to observe and interpret signs of current badger activity.

The experience helped develop my field identification and surveying skills while reinforcing the importance of accurate ecological records in understanding and protecting local badger populations.

Combining Photography, Ecology and Conservation

Being featured in the newsletter was a lovely recognition of two areas I am particularly keen to develop: wildlife photography and practical ecological fieldwork.

As I continue my Environmental Science degree and build experience in protected species surveying, opportunities like these provide valuable hands-on learning.

A big thank you to the West Surrey Badger Group for including my photography and for providing opportunities to get involved in local badger conservation.
