My journey into ecology has been a change of direction, but one that feels completely right.

After spending nearly two decades working in project and programme management, I decided to step away from my corporate career and pursue something I had become increasingly passionate about: wildlife, conservation and the natural environment.

I am currently studying towards a BSc in Natural Sciences with The Open University, with a growing focus on environmental science and ecology. Alongside my degree, I have been building practical field experience through volunteering, training and independent study, developing skills in areas including habitat surveying, protected species work, species identification, biodiversity monitoring and ecological field techniques.

Much of my learning now takes place outdoors. I have taken part in bat surveys and bat box checks, reptile surveys, butterfly transects, riverfly monitoring, bird ringing, dormouse surveys, habitat surveys and practical conservation work. These experiences have given me the opportunity to learn from experienced ecologists and volunteers while developing confidence in carrying out fieldwork myself.

In 2026, I also joined an Operation Wallacea conservation expedition in Croatia, where I participated in habitat, mammal, bird, herpetofauna, butterfly and bat surveys. Working in the field every day was a fantastic experience and reinforced my decision to build a career in ecology.

I am particularly interested in habitat assessment, biodiversity, protected species and ecological monitoring, and I enjoy understanding how individual species fit into the wider landscape and ecosystem.

This website documents that journey. It brings together my field notes, survey experience, training, species encounters, projects and photography, creating a record of what I am learning as I work towards a professional career in ecology.

For me, ecology is as much about continuing to learn as it is about identifying species. Every survey, habitat and encounter adds another piece to the picture and there is always something new to discover.
